Rare Jefferson Books
Owner By W. F. Moffett
Four rare leather-bound volumes, “Memoir, Correspondance and Miscellanies from the papers of Thomas Jefferson,” were recently brought to the News office by Mrs. Louemma Moffett. The book?, property of Mrs. Moffett’s son Mayor William F. Moffett, Jr., were given to him by his father at the time of his death.
The volumes were originally owned b> Horatio Gates Moffett, the first commonwealth attorney . of Rappahannock county, who willed the books to his grandson, the late William F. Moffett. Horatio Moffett lived during the period of the latter part of Jefferson’s life.
In the front of Volume IV is a picture of Thomas Jefferson engraved on steel from the original painting by Gilbert Stuart. Also contained in the front of each of the four volumes is the following note:

Be it remembered, that on the seventeenth day of January, in the fifty-third year of the Independence of the United States of America, Thomas Jefferson Randolph, of the said district, hath deposited in this office the title of a book, the right whereof he claims as proprietor, in the words following to wit:
“Memoir, Correspondance, and Miscellanies, from the papers of Thomas Jefferson, Edited by Thomas Jefferson Randolph.” In conformity to the Act of Conegress of the United States, entitled “an act for the encouragement of learning, by securing the copies of maps, charts, and books, to the authors and proprietors of euch copies, during the times therein mentioned.”
