Upswing In Profits Noted
On Some Virginia Farms
A 60 per cent increase in crop yields, a 48 per cent increase in livestock numbers, ar»d 50 per cent increase in grazing capacity on pastures on 200 Southwest Virginia farms during the past 10 years is reported hy D. T. Painter, Extension-TVA district agent at Independence.
Painter says the farmers also tripled their purchase and use of fertilizer during the period, and accounts show a return of $2.30 for each dollar of phosphate used.
Those farmers whose profits show a sharp upswing have been co-operators in the ExtensionT V A demonstration program. Sine' the beginning of the program, some 7,500 farmers have conducted demonstrations with TV A materials, and at present about .3,000 unit and area testdemonstration farmers are taking part.
Painter emphasizes that the increas d production has been accomplished without plowing more land, and with less farm labor. Act ally, the row crop acreage on the farms has been reduced about 25 per cent.
