him, to have conversed quite frequently with Thomas Jefferson. Mr. Powers, a carpenter by trade, helped with the construction work of the University of Viaginia, which was built during his time. He and his fellow workmen were reported to have often seen the late president strolling around the campus grounds of the university and inspecting the progress of the work being done. Jefferson would often stop by and talk with Mr. Powers and the others about the university, founded by him and in which he was so deeply interested.

Mr. Powers was the father of the late Miss Annie nad Miss Lavinia Powers, who owned the house now the property of Charlie Jenkins.
