Rugs and carpets—which often have a habit of showing (up their bare spots and frayed edges in the spring sunshine—can often be mended at home, says Mrs. Bess Morrison of the Bureau of Human Nutrition and Home Economics, U. S. Dept, of Agriculture. One of the easier rug repair jobs is rebinding the edges.

Rugs may need binding when old binding becomes worn, "serged” edges begin to fray, or when a rug is cut down to get rid of spots or to make smaller rugs. .Mrs. Morrison explains. A serged edge is machine-made and resembles a buttonhole finish.

Tools needed for the binding job include strong, sharp shears, a sharp knife, or a single-edged razor blade for cutting. Big darning or embroidery needles or a largeeyed sewing needle is best for lugs. And a thimble is a “must.’’

Thread and binding had best le the same kind the commercial repairman uses if you want professional-looking results, the textile specialist advises. Linen carpet thread is desirable and should be a good color match. Binding, which also needs to match in color, should tie twilled carpet^ binding about. 1J4 inches wide. Look for carpet thread and binding at rug or upholstery shops or on notion counters of big department stores. Mail order houses usually have them too.

Prayed edges of the r ig should be cut off before binding. Begin the binding job by sewing together the right sides of binding and carpet. Use a whip stitch anti catch the stitches- about 3/8 to 3/2 inch into the carpet. Turn over the binding and whip the edges to the under side of the rug.
