FARM WOODLANDS

At the close of 1949, the American Tree Farm System, which started in the state of Washington in 1941, had spread to 29 states, with 2,42 tree farms and a total , land area of 2W,*10,102 acres, according to a report by the American Forest Products Industries, Inc. For the fifth consecutive year the South led all ohter regions in tree farm growth with a total of 1,151,759 acres.
In Virginia the tree farm program is sponsored by the Virginia Forests, Inc. Under this program landowners receive certification and agree' to manage their timber area according to approved forestry practices. It is a program designed to recognize and honor those landowners who are prse—ticing sound forestry measures on their woodland acreage.
Its purpose is to encourage Vir* . ginia landowners to maintain or increase the value of their tree “crop” so that the forests of the state will be a perpetual source of income to their owners and to the many thousands of Virginians who are employed directly or in-: directly in the' harvesting or processing of that “crop.”
Any forest or woodland owner, whether he has much or little acreage, is eligible to receive a Tree Farm Award if he meets the standards as established by the Virginia Forestry Committee.
