Soil Saver Notes
Early August is the time most farmers in the Culpeper soil conservation district attempt to seed alfalfa. Early seedings pay off in better stands because the plants have a longer period to develop Os good root system before frost. A fine, level and compact seed bed is of vital importance in getting a good stand.
Numerous farmers in the distrTct are establishing .their alfalfa in contour strips, thus eliminating the hazard of erosion. Included in the group of framers who have plowed contour strips for alfalfa are C. R. Tinsley, Griffinsburg; Burke Brothers, Boston; Royal Minor, LaGrange; W. D. Troxell, Raccoon Ford; and I. L. Parish, Estes. “Establishing alfalfa in alternate contour strips on sloping fields is the most practical way and by all means the safest,” says C. R. Tinsley. Mr. Tinsley further states, “contour strips takes much of the gamble out of seeding alfalfa.” By this method two years are required to completely establish a field in alfalfa.

The Childress pond will be stocked with fish on •the same basis as the 65 farm ponds that have already been completed in Culpeper and Rappahannock counties.
