An additional 23 picnic tables will be installed this summer along ' primary highways, or in wayside areas, of the Culpeper highway construction district, the State High way Department reported this week.
Landscape engineers said locations for the tables will be selected at points where off-road parking and shade are available and inhere the tables will give the widest service.
Some few of the new tables will replace old Camp Peery wartime mess hall tables which are rapidly deteriorating, highway engineers said. Most of the tables, however, will be additions. They were built at the State Penitentiary.
With the new installations, each of the eight highway districts will have some 176 tables scattered along main routes or in wayside areas.
Landscape engineers said the picnic tables serve several purposes—they provide recreation spots for the picnicking family or the weary motorist; they give the safety of off-highway parking, and they have trash containers to help keep the highways dean.
