The report pointed out that the ninety-six million board feet cut under the direction of the State Foresters plus about fourteen million board feet cut under the direction of Industrial and Consulting Foresters constitutes at least 10 per cent of all lumber cut in the state during the year. The State Forester enthusiastically pointed to this remarkable progress as evidence of what can be done to grow timber as a renewable crop through the combined efforts of the landowners, the mill operators and the public services.
The popularity of the timber service program of the state was indicated by the fact that 1,718 landowners requested tiie service. The foresters examined and reported on 343,970 acres, the majority of which supported immature timber. The state forester believes that some of the most effective work of the timber service program accomplishes is in showing the landowner, when his timber is immature, that it is in its fastest growing stage and should not be cut until it matures.
In further detail ;the Teport. shows that the foresters marked 9,083 cords of pulpwood, mostly as thinnings to improve young pine stands, and selected 23,000 seed trees. The seed trees which were all thrifty pine trees with ■well-formed tops, were left standing to furnish seed for new crop of pine.
State Forester Dean, in summarizing his report, expressed appreciation to the Vocational Agriculture Teachers, the Soil Conservation District Supervisors, The County Agents, The menbers of Forest Industry, and others, for their effective assistance in the program. p
