When should pigs be weaned in today's specialized hog production business? Each producer has to decide for himself, says Dr. John Davis, veterinarian at Virginia Polytechnic Institute, but he has some information to help them decide.
Feed formulas have been worked out that permit the weaning of pigs 7 to 10 days of age. Such early weaning calls for highly palatable and nutritious prestarters and starters.
Pigs weaned at this age are thought to produce heavier pigs at 8 weeks, fewer runts, maintain better control of anemia and scours, and sows can produce a larger number of litters over a given time. Other advantages are that the sow’s feeding costs are lower, better progress is made in swine breeding, less housing space is needed, and more pigs are saved from injury by the sow.
The other side of the picture is that there are certain limitations to this early weaning as it takes highly fortified, expensive synthetic milks. Excellent management s also needed:
Other problems are that no more than 10 to 15 pigs should be fed in one group, 6 to 8 square feet of floor space should be allowed piga until they are 4 to 5 weeks of age, and a constant supply of feed and water is necessary.
Drafts should be avoided and pigs should be -started at a temperature of 80 d e g r e e s, maintained 5 inches above the bedding.
If pigs are weaned at 3 to 5 weeks of age, many of the benefits of earlier weaning can take place, plus the advantage of the sow's milk during the heavy flow period.
