Heartburn is almost as common as the cold. The fast pace of modern living with all of its stresses and strains, overeating, drinking and the wrong choice of foods are among the culprits which may cause this distress.
“Heartburn” is misnamed. The condition has nothing to do with the heart. It is nothing more than too much acid in the stomach. The stomach is located high in the abdominal cavity and contains acids which help digest our food. When too much acid is present in the stomach because of overindulgence or nervousness, there is a burning sensation in the area popularly associated with the position of the heart. That is how the name arises.
Most patent medicines sold to treat heartburn or acid indigestion are nothing more than a form of alkali which neutralizes the acids. As any student of chemistry would expect, most of them give relief. The only difficulty is that taking an
