alkali tends to cause the stomach to generate more acids. This may result in a worse heartburn, and a vicous circle can be the end effect.
A common remedy for heartburn, used for centuries, is milk. Milk is an alkali and also a natural food. The fact that it is a food means that it will not cause an acid reaction in the stomach. Yet, it will tend to neutralize an excessive amount of acid in the stomach. Although chilling the milk may make it taste better, the temperature of the milk has nothing to do with curing the heartburn.
