S : ■ * ' . * i l "t . Four new small grain variates are now recommended to Virginia farmers. Wakeland wheat, Redcoat wheat, James parley and Roanoke oats offer idvantages not previously available, .says Howard C. Potts, associate agronomist at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.
Wakeland wheat is 8 to 10 lays earlier than Seneca and Thorne, has a shorter straw and is higher yielding. It has fair resistance to leaf rust and is tolerant to mildew. Because of its early maturity and fair winter hardiness it is recommended only for the farmers in the Coastal Plains and southern Piedmont. ........
For farmers in the northern Piedmont and western areas, Redcoat wheat has been added. This' new variety is slightly earlier than Seneca or Thorne. It has shown better resistance to lodging under high fertility conditions and to leaf rust and powdery mildew than other recommended varieties in this area. Yields have been 5 to 10 percent higher than Seneca. Because of its resistance to the Hessian fly, it can be planted prior to frost.
James barley is essentially Wong barley with an insurance policy. It is much like Wong in appearance. However, it is resistant to leaf rust and scald and will outyield Wong when these diseases are present. Tests conducted in the Coastal Plains and soutnern Piedmont,
