Agriculture, however, provides a living for most Jamaicans. Sugar cane is the leading crop. Bananas, citrus fruits, coffee, and coconuts also are grown in quantity.
One former occupation— piracy—has long since died out. In the 17th century, the notorious 'Henry Morgan and other “pirates forayed from Port Royal, Jamaica, to raid Spanish ships and cities in the Caribbean. Port Royal became known as “t h e world’s wickedest town.” But a violent earthquake swallowed two-thirds of the port in 1692. For nearly 300 years the remains of the buccaneers’ capital have lain under silt and murky water. In 1959 the National Geographic-Smithsonian-Link expedition recovered hundreds of artifacts and mapped the sunken city.
