through the efforts of Garden Club ladies and Highway Dept, men. After hurricane waters destroyed these improvements, classes were started each summer at Kilby’s pond as well as at a few private pools in the county. Rev. H. E. Nicholson of Middleburg, formerly of Sperryville, the late Mrs. Lola Quasebarth of Woodville, Mrs. W. W. Cloe, formerly Peggy Pillar of Sperryville, and Miss Tish Kilby have all been instructors at one time or another of free swimming lessons at Kilby’s pond. For the past two summers Tish has conducted private lessons. Elsewhere in the county similar activities have been going on. In Flint Hill Mr. Paul Nichols has been very active in these programs.
A couple of generations ago mothers told their children “Don’t go near the water”. Today most informed poeple realize that the safest thing is to teach children to swim and to give them fundamentals of water safety.
