Presidential Election
Substantial 7th Congressional District support for direct election of the President, and for a national primary to choose party Presidential nominees, is reflected in a tabulation of returns in a mail poll conducted by Rep. John 0. Marsh, Jr.
A computerized count of 10,416 responses also indicated that 7th District citizens, based on what they have read or heard about it, favor President Nixon’s limited anti-ballistic missile system by a margin of nearly two to one.
Those responding also voted heavily in favor of a limitation on the terms of federal judges, including those of the Supreme Court, and strongly against present national policy in Vietnam. As to Vietnam, however, opinion as to what should be done was divided rather sharply, with more vigorous military, diplomatic and economic pressure registering an edge over gradual withdrawal of American forces, “Early and complete withdrawal”* of our forces, without .regard, to the course of the Paris peace talks, was a poor third in the balloting.
In releasing the results, Marsh stated that he was continuing to receive responses; however, the number of these was comparatively small. He said he regarded the 10,000 plus responses that had been tabulated as a sample that is reasonably representative, “within the limits of the stated questions, and the options offered”.
