done in the fields of hybridization and irradiation to find and develop blight resistant chestnut trees with desirable growth and timber qualities. On the Lesesne State Forest are some of the pioneer efforts in irradiation by Dr. W. Ralph Singleton, University of Virginia and Dr. Albert Dietz of Wadsworth, Ohio. The hybridization research on the forest is the work of Dr. Richard A. Jaynes of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station.
The Virginia Division of Forestry, as custodian of the Lesesne State Forest, will serve as coordinator of the research project and it is hopeful that the Lesesne State Forest chestnut research effort will prove instrumental in “bringing back” the American Chestnut which was one of the most useful and valuable trees found in the eastern hardwood forests.
