vwi piai.c. beaches, many communities build groins-long piles of rocks that project into the current. A groin tends to collect sand for upcoast beaches-at the expense of downcoast beaches. Downcoast owners then erect barriers of their own to try to retain what sand they do receive.
Dunes Protect Beaches
N*tural shore dunes help protect beaches. Thus many state laws prohibit the grazing on or destruction of scotch broom, sea oats, and other plants that hold the dunes. In some areas, old Christmas trees are planted in rows to help form dunes, much as snow fences bank up blowing snow.
Importing sand from a distance is a last resort, but even then it may quickly depart. The ocean current gulped 100,000 cubic yards of carefully trucked-in sand at one beach in little more than a month.
The Army Corps of Engineers has located huge sand shoals in the oceans that can be dredged to nourish starving beaches. Sand from underwater dunes of argonite, used in glass and plastics, was spread on a Florida beach. Bathers vowed it was better than the original sand.
