“But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness,” (Rom. 4:5)
In Romans chapter 4, the apostle used the great patriarch Abraham as an example of how God justifies men. God does not need to wait until a life completely unfolds in order to know that person. God looks upon the heart.
The person who has faith in the promises of God is justified without or apart from works that he may perform. This is salvation by grace.
When a person has faith in God, his life will follow a course consistent with God’s word. This was true in Abraham’s case. He believed God and staked everything on the promises he had been given.
Faith brought justification and God’s favor, and faith in turn produced obedience in Abraham’s life. So it is that a believer today is justified or saved by his faith in Christ as Savior. Then faith works within to develop the Christian character and life. We may put it this way; The root is faith and the fruit is obedience.
