A cold, in itself, usually is not a serious illness, but it can become serious because of complications that may develop. Often what seems to be, “just a cold,” may be neglected at the very time when it is most contagious and when skilled medical and nursing care will do the most good. Frequent colds and long-continued and severe colds may lead to chronic infection of the nose, throat, ears, sinuses or lungs, or to pneumonia and can even make a fertile field for tuberculosis. For those reasons it is important to clear up a cold as soon as possible.
