Death for 1970
Commenting on the traffic death which placed Virginia’s toll above the thousand mark for the seventh consecutive year, Governor Linwood Holton today asked for extra effort from the citizens of Virginia in curbing such deaths and more awareness of the tragic situation. “One of the really sad things about this is that not many people will pay much attention to it,” he said. “Can’t we be careful? Can’t we as operators of motor vehicles, think about the fact that the next crash could be me,” was his plea.
“Saving lives,” he continued, “is worth extra effort.” Here, he noted that there is some comfort in the fact that deaths this year have been running below those for the same period of last year and there is every hope of an appreciable reduction. November and December of last year saw a total of 223 deaths.
Governor Holton noted further that Virginia experienced 1,110 deaths in 1941 and then went until 1964 before topping the thousand mark again, although there were 999 in 1951. Since 1964, the State’s annual toll has not dropped below 1,000 and Iasi year saw the all-time record ol 1,604.
As of September 2, 1970 deaths were 67 below those o 1969’s comparable period.
