an animal out of its misery, and will deny a human the same consideration. It seems to be the motto of those in medicine ‘where there is life there is hope’, or tomorrow we may find a cure. I’m not so sure I agree with those who prolong life by artificial means when that prolongation is not desired by the sufferer. Maybe the one who suffers should have the choice of a life of pain or a merciful termination. In that case would he create the same karma as the suicide?
There is a story about a man whose father had reached that state in life where he had outlived his usefulness. One day he decided that it would be the merciful thing to do to take his father down to the river and dispose of him in that manner. He hitched up the horse to the wagon, put his father in a large basket and headed for the river. On the way he met his son who asked where he was taking his grandfather. After explaining the conditions to his son, the son said, “Okay dad, but bring the basket back, I may need it for you some day.” Is there a moral here? Honor thy father and thy mother (they get old too)? Thou shalt not kill? Do unto others as you would that they do unto you? Whatever measure you measure to others, it will be measured back to you? Or just a plain old karmic debt that one
