ttappanannocK citizens who spoke against granting the special use permit during a hearing before the Zoning Appeals Board last Thursday (August 7) claimed the development of the ski area, as outlined by Weil, would offer no advantages to offset the encumbrances it would place upon the county. Opponents cited traffic congrestion in the town of Washington; increased traffic volume, which would make more frequent maintenance and a new bridge necessary for the gravel secondary road which is used to reach the ski area; additional fire, police and rescue squad services; as well as “litter” and “pollution,” as some of the disadvantages or costs the county could expect if Weil and Miller went ahead with their recreational development plans.
Their fears were supported by two letters read aloud near the end of the hearing. One was from Don Askew, resident engineer for the Virginia Department of Highways, and the other was from the Rappahannock County Planning Commission, which had conducted a “fact finding survey” on the ski area at the request of the Zoning Appeals Board.
