SPERRYVILLE has moved from 125th place to fifth on the SWCB’s 1977 priority list for funding sewage and wastewater treatment plants. Supervisor Chairman Pete Luke said the county has received a grant from HUD for $188,000 for piping costs of any sewage project. He also said that the county had gotten tentative approval for an EPA grant of $785,008 to cover construction costs. With the state contributing funds amounting to 20 percent of the total cost, funding for the project will amount to 95 percent, according to Luke.
While $10,000 of the $188,000 HUD grant has been set aside to help the 27 families still using pit privies to put in bathrooms, Luke noted that the county could receive another HUD Urban Renewal grant for substandard homes that could also be used to cover costs involved in installing indoor plumbing.
