The important work of saving (and restoring) the Mt. Salem Church received a severe setback Friday when the work of the young group being paid under the National Youth Summer Employment Act (I think that’s its title) was abruptly stopped because the work would benefit a church and that’s not allowed by that Act.
So be it. I shall not mention Mr. Jefferson’s hand in that because, loving architecture, he would have sought a remedy in this crisis. Now it puts the job up to the community (some of whom have already pledged substantial support), to those who feel the importance of saving from vandals (including the weather) an example of past skill and constructional integrity, and those who see the value in preserving an historic site made so by generations of people of this country meeting together for the purpose of making better people themselves.
The need for that endeavor will never lessen, nor can any reason be found for thinking it unnecessary. It is to be hoped that the
