Dear Citizens and Friends of Rappahannock County:

We all need to be reminded and made fully aware that it is not enough to say, "Call the doctor”; a doctor may not be available to come to the scene of the emergency! The current Red Cross training manual for First Aid and Emergency Care provides some grim reminders for each of us: Statistics show that accidents are the leading cause of death among persons from 1 year old to 38 years old; thereafter, accidents are one of the leading causes. The annual cost of medical attention, the loss of earning ability due to temporary or permanent impairment, the direct property damage, and the insurance costs amount to many billions of dollars each year, not to mention the toll in pain, suffering, disability, and personal tragedy.” Being reminded is surely necessary, but even more important is the matter of coping with the situation. During the recent and most severe winter in our history, several members of the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad completed a comprhensive First Aid training course. We feel that the reason for this typical effort is also important for you to know about. To help alleviate the statistics quoted above is basic to the mission of the SVRS. Prompt rescue service, first aid knowledge and skill can mean the difference between life and death, between temporary and permanent disability, and between rapid recovery and long hospitalization. The volunteer service mission of the SVRS is to help you, your loved ones, your friends and visitors when an emergency arises. The State and the public are insisting on more thoroughly trained personnel and more up-todate-dquipment. This requires funds from the people in our service area, since the County does not fund rescue services in Rappahannock. Now you have the reason for this letter. Your continued financial support will enable the SVRS to provide the between element when an emergency arises. The members of the SVRS who provide rescue service for you and your Community are now asking you to volunteer your financial assistance. Your support will enable us to continue serving you.
