Twenty-nine persons were killed in traffic crashes during 1977 in Planning District Nine. Alcohol was a contributing factor in 45 percent of these deaths, according to a report just released by the District Nine VASAP in Culpeper.
These figures are considerably less than 1976 when 36 persons were killed in traffic crashes in Planning District Nine with alcohol being involved in 76 percent of those deaths.

Dean Irvine, Director of i he District Nine VASAP, stated that there were several possible reasons for this decrease in alcohol related fatalities. Among these reasons are: increased enforcement, accounting for a 20 percent increase in "drunk driving” arrests for 1977 over 1976; increased public awareness of what problems drinking and driving can cause as pointed out by federal, state and local public information programs; the activities of local VASAP programs in the areas of education and treatment.
