Warner the nomination for a second time. Hardline conservative Republicans seem to have assumed an air of “Anyone But Warner.” They have even gone as far as approaching former Qov. Mills Godwin and are now talking about asking former U.S. Attorney General Elliot Richardson to curry the party banner. It seems that for some, Warner’s conservative credentials are not enough.
We would think that the question Republicans should be asking themselves is: Who is the most likely Republican candidate to win in November? The obvious answer to this is Warner. While we are not saying that he will defeat Democratic candidate Andrew Miller, we do feel that he could run a strong, effective' campaign.
Warner has name recognition across the Commonwealth, he has the ability to put together a first-rate campaign organization and he has the money to stage a serious race.
And Warner has proven himself in the Republican Party. He was one of the finrt to congratulate Obenshain after the convention was over. He donated $500 to the campaign and offered his support to the ticket
Instead of running for cover to lick his battle woonds, Warner led |. the troops in rallying around the patty’s nominee. His actions were tailing party members that he-was in the party to stay.
While we are not yet ready to endorse a candidate for election next fall, #e do feel that the Republicans should get behind John Warner. It is the political and the sensible thing to do. Richard Obenshain built a viableparty, but for a party to have real influence, it must win elections.
