To the Editor: In a recent editorial you state that no Proposition 13 is needed in Rappahannock County. I agree with you but for reasons, I suspect, quite different from those you had in mind.
To date, no taxpayers’ revolt is justified in Rappahannock for the simple reason that the taxpayers of this County, through their elected representatives, have refused to buy the concept of the welfare state and its nofault society.
It would seem that past and present supervisors have displayed intelligence and foresight, instead of being forced, as elsewhere, to uproot an all-consuming bureaucratic monster allowed to entrench itself under the guise of idealistic and “progressive” slogans.
In the cited editorial and the one above it you beg taxpayers of this County to “pay a few more dollars” in taxes. You are talking against the wind; talking against the mood of this entire country which, having endured long enough the results of this kind of talk, is now turning on the monster.
It seems that some people have to be hit over the head with a 2 by 4 to learn, but apparently the people- 41 Rappahannock do not,
You accuse the Supervisors of economizing; you should congratulate them.
You accuse the Supervisors of demanding a dollar’s value for a dollar spent; you should applaud them. ‘ You accuse the Supervisors of nit-picking over every addition to the county bureaucracy; you 'should praise them for it. •; i, You accuse the Supervisors if maintaining one of the lowest real property tax rates around, despite the fact that they are "mandated” by outsiders to spend here, there, and everywhere; is not this accomplishment worthy of praise rather than of i condemnation? •
