The only restrictions on a deputy funded through VASAP’s Selective Enforcement Grant would be that he could not be used for legal service or court duty, according to Irvine.
"He could patrol, answer emergency calls, check businesses while he is patrolling and handle all violations of the law that he observes,” the VASAP director wrote. •* Irvine informed the Supervisors that the grant period was for one year, beginning October 1, and urged that application be made as soon as possible.
He noted that the vehicle and installed equipment becomes the property of the Rappahannock Sheriff s Department if the grant is not renewed after one year.
"I feel strongly that, from past observations, these grants will be ongoing as long as there is increased drunk driving enforcement.” Irvine concluded.
