same hours as the Sheriffs other deputies,” Dean Irvine informed the Supervisors. “He would be hired by the Sheriff and his vehicle could be kept on the road 24 hours a day,” the VASAP director said, adding that the cruiser could be driven by anyone in the Sheriffs Department.

The new deputy will also be able to investigate crimes, according to Irvine. He noted that the only facets of police work that the new deputy couldn’t cover would be court protection and serving legal papers.

The Supervisors suggested that Buntin look further into the Selective Service Grant program after the Sheriff remarked that the information from Irvine was new to him.

“I discussed it with you six months ago,” claimed Davis.

"No, you didn’t,” Buntin answered.

Irvine reported that the program has been in existence since 1973 with several cities .and Roanoke County winning grants. The Supervisors took no action on the grant application listed as $22,882.10
