pump supplies nutrients to the tomato beds in ten minute intervals interspersed between five minute breaks for air.
Everything is tied together—kind of like the old song about the hip bone connected to the thigh bone connected to the knee bone on down to the ankle and so on. In the Kuncewicz's greenhouses, the connections are all electrical.
A thermostat control activates the two fans, one at a time, as the temperature reaches certain levels. The second fan activates a pump that turns on a sprinkler system at the other end of the building. The sprinkler system creates a curtain of moisture that helps keep the temperature down in the building.
That's the summer set up.
For colder weather, the greenhouses have two heating systems with tubes that run between the tomato plants. And in summer and winter, fresh air is brought into the plants 24 hours a day with an extra heavy dose at night.
The tomatoes are grown in five beds 130 feet long with two rows to each bed and kept erect by a system of adjustable plastic lines and clamps. The plants themselves are nothing fancy or exotic. In fact. Wit has used the same variety that is recommended by VPI for growing outdoors in Virginia in cages.
