ALFALFA—The timing of the last cutting of Alfalfa can have a definite effect on next year’s yield and the longevity of the stand. Experienced Alfalfa growers try to time the last hay cutting three to four weeks before the first killing frost.
What really hurts is when Alfalfa is cut late in the season and weather conditions are favorable for the plants to make 6 or 8 inches of rapid growth and then bang—be knocked back by a hard freeze. This allows the plants to draw heavily on the food reserve in the roots but not time enough to restore them. The weakened plants are more suspectible to winter kill.
