This month. Virginia apple producers are expected to begin harvesting one of their best crops in years. After a season of unusually good weather, apple trees in Rappahannock and throughout the state are heavy with fruit.
The United States Department of Agriculture Crop Reporting Service predicts a harvest in the Commonwealth of 10.7 million bushels, a significant increase over last year's crop of around seven million bushels.
In I975. a season which produced the largest Virginia crop in recent years, apple growers sent some 1.4 million bushels to market.
According to the September edition of Farm Bureau News, there have been indications that the national apple crop is projected to be larger than normal, which may make selling of Virginia apples a bit more difficult. While supplies and quality are up. prices have dropped from last vear.
