The state Commission of Outdoor Recreation will hold a series of public forums around the state during September to give interested citizens an opportunity to comment on the final 1979 Virginia Outdoors Plan.
The meeting for this area is set for Thursday, September 28, at Warren County High School in Front Royal from noon to 3 p.m. A second night session is scheduled for the same location beginning at 7 p.m.
The draft Outdoors Plan singles out Route 729 in Rappahannock County from Route 211 to Route 522 as having "potential for consideration and possible designation as components in the Virginia Byway system."
If designated as a scenic byway by the state Highway Commission, road markers indicating the designation will be put up along Route 729. In addition, future road improvements will be restricted unless the Highway Department acts to change the designation. Inclusion in the Virginia Byway system carries no restrictions on land use on either side of the road.
The Rappahannock River in Rappahannock. Fauquier and Culpeper Counties, from its headwaters to the Town of Remington, and the Thornton and Hazel Rivers in Rappahannock and Culpeper Counties, from Sperryville to the Rappahannock River, are under consideration for "study and possible inclusion into the Virginia Scenic Rivers System." according to the draft Plan.
