bushel price that apples will bring, the producer’s other expenditures haven’t gone down. Pickers are paid at least 35 cents per bushel to harvest processing and juicing apples. Shipping costs from Rappahannock to Winchester run approximately 25 cents per bushel.
At $4 per hundred weight, a bushel of juice apples brings less than $2 BEFORE picking, shipping and other production costs are figured in. With only harvest expenses taken into account, juicers will bring a return of less than $1.25 per bushel. This figure doesn’t include the grower’s costs for spraying, pruning, thinning or other related activities.
For apples destined for fresh fruit sales, picking costs are higher with workers paid as much as 50 cents per bushel to handle delicate Golden Delicious apples. In addition, the grower must pay for having his produce graded, washed, brushed and packed.
This banner year for apples begins to look like a mixed blessing for growers. While inflation has sent prices sky rocketing for just about everything else on the market, the price of apples remains governed by supply and demand and in a year like this one. that means low!
