Last year, canners ran from $5 to $7.75—approximately $2 more per hundred weight. Producers here are afraid that the plunge in the canner market sill be reflected in prices that apples intended for fresh fruit sales will bring later in the season. They are also concerned that President Carter may slap on price controls as a last ditch effort to halt inflation, thus setting apple prices at a level lower than the fruit has brought in years.
At Sharp’* Farm
At Capt. and Mrs. George Sharp's farm outside Washington, the only county orchard listed in VPI's pickyour-own bulletin, a bushel of apples with container sells for $5—the same price that the Sharps charged last year.
Although pick-your-own operations aren't burdened with paying wages for harvesting, upkeep expenses on the orchard itself are higher. In addition to keeping the orchard carefully mowed, the Sharps must continue maintenance work on the picnic area and hiking trails that they open to customers.
