According to Wit, the operation will not take up as much of the time once it's established. While the tomato plants are growing, they need to be suckered. "They're most efficient when they're trained to a single stem." he said. "Also, space is at a premium here." he explained, so the tomatoes can't be allowed to grow into bushes.
Grown from seed, the plants will produce fruit for at least nine months, according to Wit. "By the time they decline in productivity, they'll be 80 to 90 feet long." he said. As the plants turn into too long, tall giants, they will be lowered until the plant rests on its side.
Although suckering chores will abate as the plants near maturity, other work will have to be kept up. The nutrients that are fed the plants in their root water bath must be changed every week. Then the roots need to be rinsed thoroughly with pure w ater to get rid of salts accumulation. As the salts are suspended in the rinse water, it must be thrown out and replaced with a fresh mixture of water and nutrients.
