Republican John W. Warner of Atoka won certification Monday as the official winner of the election Nov. 7 for the US Senate.
Warner said he accepted the results of the official canvass by the three-member State Board of Elections “with humility.”
Democratic challenger Andrew Miller, former state attorney general, has not conceded and may ask for a vote recount since the winning margin is less than one-half of one per cent..
Should Miller call for a recount, and he is still the loser, he would have to pay for it at an estimated cost of $120,000. He must file by Dec. 7 for any new tabulation.
The official canvass showed Warner with 613.232 votes and Miller with 608,511—a margin of 4721 votes of 1.22 million cast—making the general election the closest ever for a Virginia Senate seat.
Warner got 50.2 per cent of the vote. Miller 49.8 per cent. There were 513 write-in votes.
