The dog is trained to guard a suspect being searched and to attack in the event the suspect should attempt to harm the officer.
The animals are generally donated to the Police Department, and must be males at least a year old. The Department is presently looking for another dog.
According to Moore, German shepherds have a natural instinct for this Work, and some are also trained in narcotics work. The State provides the food, shots, veterinary services for the dog, and the handler does the rest.
