Miller's hopes for reversing the outcome would depend on finding errors through a recount of votes cast on approximately 4000 voting machines and some written ballots. i< The state election officials balanced precinct tally sheets against city and county totals compiled by local election officials, but did not order a general reexamination of totals recorded on voting machines.

Mahan said that vote counts were rechecked in only five or six of the state's 1857 precincts during the official canvass.

Those checks were made because of apparent errors in tally sheets compiled by precinct officials.

Mahan' said only three errors were found—all in Miller’s favor—during the official tabulation, closing the gap between the two candidates by a mere 13 votes.

Miller has mailed appeals to contributors asking for donations to help finance a recount.
