On Wednesday, the Rappahannock Planning Commission received the first draft of background material on population and economy for the county’s comprehensive plan.
“This inventory puts down in writing what most of us felt was the situation,’’ commented planner Newbill Miller after John Capelle, executive director of the Rappahannock-Rapid an Planning District Commission, had reviewed the data for the planners.
Population analysis shows Rappahannock’s population declined by 32.6 per cent between 1930 and 1970 from 7,717 to 5,199. This trend reversed in 1970. By 1975, the population grew to 5,745, a ten per cent jump.
“Percentagewise, that’s quite an increase,” said Capelle, noting that the state’s population grew only 7.1 per cent during the same period.
In terms of total population, Rappahannock ranked 93rd out of 96 counties in 1970 and 90th in 1975.
