Masterson continued with charges that some sports “have more coaches than participants.”
“I don’t know of any sport where that’s the case,’’ Bloomer countered.
"Please check the eighth grade basketball coach to see if he’s ever played,” Masterson requested.
“My information is that he played in high school but not beyond that,” Bloomer answered.
Stokes asked if the extra curricular pay scale rewarded competence.
Pay For Wins?
“That’s not been the case in the past but if you believe that competency is based on win-lose percentages, we can pay for the number of games won,” countered Bloomer.
“The thing that makes me suspicious is we had a head coach out there last year teaching incorrect fundamentals of the game and he was rewarded for...teaching incorrectly. How about the injuries to the youngsters?” asked Masterson, who is a former professional baseball player and currently serves as assistant coach at George Mason University.
The coach in question, said. Bloomer, was paid for the time he put into the baseball program.
Nichols moved that an additional SI,290 be added to the instruction category to cover extra-curricular and degree supplement increases.
“I think those teachers who do those extra activities should have an increase. I’d rather give it to the teachers than anybody else because they’re the ones in there everyday working,” agreed Mrs. Quaintance.
The motion carried three to two with Masterson and Stokes opposed. Following the vote, the board recessed its meeting until March 26 for a session on capital outlay programs and a vote on the capital outlay section of the proposed budget.
