Five weeks before the May 1 state income tax deadline, needy half of Virginia’s two million taxpayers still have not mailed in their state income tax forms, the Virginia Department of Taxation said today.
Now’s a good time to file those returns to avoid the last minute rush, department officials say, especially if a refund is due. The department is now processing refund returns in three to five weeks and is more than 100,000 refunds ahead of the 499,386 refunds processed by the same time last year. That turn-around time, however, could grow to eight weeks or more over the next two months. Officials added that even though a taxpayer must fill out the federal return first to get information needed on the state return, the forms don’t have to be mailed in that order or at the same time.
