“A lot of the services that the supervisors may end up providing depends on the composition of the population,” said Capelle in explaining the inclusion of a section on age-sex distribution. A comparatively young population with many females of child bearing ages will affect the demand for public facilities and services, he said.
Figures show Rappahannock’s population getting older with fewer people below 25 years and more in the over 65 years group. ‘‘This is pretty characteristic of rural counties,” Capelle said.
Between 1950 and 1970, the median age of Rappahannock County residents increased from 26.3 to 30.4 years. In comparison, the median age in the state was 26.9 in 1970.
Between 1950 and 1970 population under 18 years decreased from 38.4 per cent to 34.1 per cent while the over-65 population increased from 26.3 to 30.4 per cent.
