The transitional first grade is designed to assist those youngsters who, for various reasons, are not really ready for the first grade. They need additional readiness skills before they can handle the complex tasks involved in math and reading. For example, they need to master such concepts as “bigger than or less than, in front of, behind, left-right, and to recognize shapes, sizes, colors, and eventually letters and numerals. Most of the students assigned to this classroom will move on to the second grade at the end of the first year. Others will be placed in a regular first grade in order to expand upon and reinforce first grade skills.
