Olympics
Rappahannock Boy Scouts joined other area troops over the weekend at a camporee in Luray designed to support the 1980 U. S. Olympic Team. As part of *,the “Olympic Team Good Turn” Fall Camporee, scouts competed on a one mile obstacle course designed by 10 local troops.
The Olympic Good Turn program is currently being sponsored throughout the U. S. by the Boy Scouts of America and the Coca Cola Company. Its aims are threefold:
—to provide every Boy Scout a challenging physical fitness activity,
—to allow each scout to make a personal contribution of $1 to the U. S. Olympic team and earn an Olympic Good Turn Patch,
—to make scouts aware of service to others and pride in America.
Local groups that took part in the camporee included Troop 123 from Washington with leaders Buddy Bywaters and James Shaw and unit commissioner “Yogi” Bear, Troop 142 from Boston-Castleton with leader Gene Fisher, Troop 36 from Flint Hill with leaders Paul Nichols and R. A. Baines and Troop 65 from Sperryville with leader Sam Aylor. r
