enrichment for grades one through three. After pretesting to determine specific weaknesses, the lab teacher, assisted by a full time aide, utilizes a multitude of high interest materials to meet the needs of each child.
Students in the primary lab, as in the other labs, get a “double dose” in that the instruction received in this lab is in addition to the time spent on reading in the regular classroom. A goal of the lab is to work closely with the classroom teacher in order that the instruction presented is not contradictory or confusing when presented in conjunction with the reading series used in the regular classroom.
The elementary reading lab, grades 4-7, is built around the high intensity management system by Random House. Students are tested during the first week in the lab and the results of this test are used to determine class assignments for the duration of the year with periodic testing to determine if the student has mastered particular skills and to determine if the student needs to work on additional ones. As with the primary lab, concentrated effort is made to see that the instruction in the reading lab supplements that which is given in the regular classroom.
