At 1:45 a.m. last Tuesday, after voting their way through the superintendent's 1981-82 budget item by item, the Rappahannock School Board lopped off the last $500 in a total of $106,991 to leave the bottom line of next year’s proposed school expenditures at $2,138,801.
The new bottom line represents a 15 per cent increase over the current year's estimated expenditures. The budget must now go to the supervisors for approval.
The final cut came in the gifted and talented program's instrumental music classes held after school. Earlier cuts took out the special services coordinator ($17,000), maintenance supervisor ($15,000). aides for special education and libraryguidance ($15,917), vehicle for transporting handicapped students ($21,300). public address system for the high school ($13,524), musical instruments ($3,290) and computer printer and service ($12,789).
Over Robert Eastham's objections, a 12.4 per cent cost of living raise was applied to the salaries of all school employees with the exception of the superintendent's and assistant superintendent's positions.
The representative from Wakefield District supported a nine per cent across-theboard raise for all employees to combat inflation and an additional three ner cent "step increase" for teachers
