Haul Manure
Kit and Stinky regularly haul the manure spreader after just a few months of weekly training sessions limited on one end by the demands of Jackie's full-time job and at the other end by short winter days. Now that the arrival of spring has stretched daylight hours past 5 p.m., she anticipates longer than 20 minute turns in harness for her team.
With the extra work, Jackie plans to have the fillies put out a little corn this year and soon rake hay and clip and drag pastures. The pair istj’t ready yet to be hitched to a plow since as two-yearolds, they’re not mature enough to pull heavier weights. “All three of us need to learn a little more before we try the plow,” Jackie said.
“But they’re becoming more and more practical,” she added. ‘ “1 can already spread manure and not burn " a drop of gas!”
Practicality is half the key to Jackie’s involvement with draft horses. As the price of fuel continues its rapid march towards $2 or more per gallon, horses are becoming the wave of the future in farming rather than an echo from the past.
