Kit and Minky, the weekends devoted to their continued schooling and the afternoons and evenings hauling hay, filling feed buckets and forking out dirty stalls, she volunteers her time as president of the three-yearold Virginia Draft Horse Association, a statewide organization dedicated to promoting breeding, use and interest in draft horses. The signs are encouraging. Jackie reported that Belle Grove Plantation is Middletown in conjunction with the association will sponsor draft horse day this summer complete with pulling contest and demonstrations of blacksmithing, harnessing, plowing and driving.
The association Jias been invited for the first time to put on a demonstration at the prestigious Upperville Colt and Horse Show. In addition, Jackie said, Virginia’s 4-H judging championships to be held this year at Rapidan River Farm will include draft horses.
As part of her unofficial position as draft horse ambassador, Jackie recently hosted the Rappahannock Horse and Pony Club for an afternoon of getting acquainted with Percherons. The 4-H’ers all practiced driving her two-horse team as well as harnessing the fillies and then went for a ride in the spreader after the manure was dumped.
